You should upgrade or use an alternative browser. Petco - Takes very good care of their fish, has a little problems with some fish. Petsmart - Average place to buy fish because I become a little concerned with their fish because sometimes when I go there I see some dead or dying fish. Walmart - Worst place to buy fish.

One time I was very concerned since I saw a lot of dead fish being sucked into a filter. They take very bad care of their danio fish which is the zebra one too. They also take very bad care of their bettas because sometimes I see them living in very bad, nasty looking water. It is not recommended to get fish there.

They will mostly have beat up, polluted, unhealthy fish. Again, a very biased and subjective thread. Not all Petcos and Petsmarts and Walmarts are the same. They vary by location and staff.

The Petco near me is much worse than the Petsmart. Personally, I don't buy fish from any of these places. Maybe you should make it more clear that these are your personal opinions and not general rules. I'm not being bossy about this, I'm just saying it as a recommendation. Again, all of these stores vary by location, so your recommendation on these specific places doesn't broadly apply.

My petco is okay, and the local petsmart is worse. Both have issues with keeping healthy Bettas though, 'tis why I bought mine online.

I haven't bought fish from three different places as of yet, but the ebay seller I got my betta from was a great experience. He includes heat packs on the cold days, and packages a box within a box with lots of packing material, then the betta was double bagged. I also like certain amazon sellers for snails, and peabodysparadise. I would love to know more about your ebay buys. This is something that has always struck my curiosity of shipping fish.

I've talked with the main Fish lady quite a few times. Walmarts are suppose to PH test weekly, filter weekly, pull dead fish out instantly upon sight, feed times. Our walmart has 8g Cubes I think, maybe regular 10s and they are generally overstocked.

Because they have a minimum order to process. However their pH is generally 6. I have personally tested for all their tanks except Goldies they have separate filter systems. I can even special order fish. Yet, I still prefer a designated fish store. I thing your smaller owner operated pet stores are best. Click to expand Walmart has been abusing their fish for years since around like or so.

They should stop selling live fish soon. I'm so confused by this as your title says top 3 places but you recommend people not to buy from the third? Wouldn't local breeders be an ideal place? They had a baby neon tetra in with tiger barbs! And all of the betas were dead. In my area my lfs and petco are about tied. Lfs is good and knowledgeable but they only carry pretty generic stock, unless you have saltwater, in which case they are pretty good.

I don't think I've ever been to my petco and not seen someone doing something to the fish. They are pretty knowledgeable and have a better selection of plants , and stock some fish my lfs doesn't.

Petsmart in my area is ok. They generally don't have much I'm interested in and I don't like going in there simply because they put a full sized petsmart in a building half the size of one. The aisles are super close together and stacked up to about 12 feet. Pretty claustrophobic for me. My Walmart is pretty bland and I can always find a dead fish in almost every tank. That doesn't bother me, but the fact that they've been dead for at least 12 hours and no longer have eyes creeps me out.

I went to a Walmart the next town over and I was pretty shocked. No dead fish but nothing had much for fins either. Tetras , guppies and snails were the only small tank species. They had tons of plecos , discus , gouramis , 3 different tanks of different goldfish, and even a lone Oscar. Think he had fin rot as he had no tank mates but still was missing some fins. I think my local walmart has at least one knowledgeable employee since on occasion there are no dead fish and he's politely telling people the feeder goldfish are feeders, and if rescued would get too big for the fishbowl Timmy wants.

Don't see that person there very often though. If you live in southwestern ohio, or like to drive, gerbers tropical fish is by far the best fish store I have ever been too. I have never seen a sick fish there, they are extremely knowledgeable, and have a huge selection of fish. Big Red. Hey TexasDomer, from your username I assume you're from Texas. I will buy koi and goldfish from our Walmart IF it's shortly after they've gotten their shipment in and haven't had much time to screw them up.

Needless to say this hasn't happened often! Cool, I didn't know this! I make sure I know all my lfs delivery days. For the box stores its best to wait a cpl days bc they loose quite a few from travel stress. Ntm water quality. Not to mention poor acclamation procedure too. My Walmart is a mixed bag, they carry interesting fish like pea puffers , and gobies that seem healthy.

Then right next to them there's a big tank of dead feeder goldfish. My Walmart is a mixed bag, they carry interesting fish like pea puffers, and gobies that seem healthy.

Wal-mart filters all there tanks in the same filter. When I go there it takes me less than 30 seconds to find a sick fish. It's ok to get a wal-mart fish. As long as you quarantine , and have the basic medication on hand. As long as you quarantine, and have the basic medication on hand. I still wouldn't buy from Walmart just because I don't want to support them selling fish there in the first place.

There's a Walmart close to me that stopped selling live fish because everyone stopped buying them. I'd much rather support an online fish business than horribly conditioned Walmart fish.

Not to take this too far off topic, bit how do you know the fish at your online store aren't keeping there fish in the same conditions, or worse?
